Early Childhood SI2 Scholars 2019
Abby PanozzoIllinois State University
Early Childhood ESL Endorsement Interests are dogs, friends, traveling, and of course teaching! mental health awarenessI created this sculpture to share an issue I am passionate about, which is mental health and the awareness of it. Mental health is something that has been stigmatized since the dawn of time, especially in schools.
We all come from different backgrounds, and you never know what is going on in someone else's life. Being able to help our students cope with their feelings can make a HUGE difference in our world. We also need to help our students identify with their feelings that they may be unsure of. All in all, we need to break the stigma and be there for our students when they need us most. goalAbby is working on building her confidence as a student teacher. She will be observing you closely. She will be emulating your language and the strategies you use. She can practice this by leading small groups for you. Any feedback you have for her would be greatly appreciated.

Azra ImperialBradley University
Early Childhood Education Major ESL Endorsements Kindergarten-2nd Grade Cooking different foods and watching Nailed It. Pretending I wouldn't be as bad as the bakers on the show. I would love to teach Kindergarten even though I adore daycare (6 weeks-3 years preferably). knowingKnowing is about understanding that all the different textures represent different students. But the unifying color of blue is to unite the idea that students are all different but all deserve support from the teacher.
Essentially knowing your students and being able to provide for them. Supporting more intimately than a general knowledge of the student. goalAzra is working on writing objectives and delivering them in student friendly language. She will check for understanding by asking the students what they are working on and why they are working on it.
She can deliver a mini-lesson for you. |
Carli BennEarly Childhood at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with ESL endorsement
Want to teach preschool. Interests: Disney, photography, and animals environmental learningI am passionate about creating an environment that is a safe space but also encourages learning for my students. I went to Italy and visited Reggio Emilia and love the idea of creating learning spaces in the classroom based on what the children want to learn.
I also love the community with the students, staff, family, and neighborhood that Reggio Emilia incorporates into their lessons. It is important to use the classroom and environment as a third teacher for the students. goalCarli is working on practicing different strategies for keeping students behaviorally safe, on-task, and engaged in their work. She will be independently researching different strategies and applying them in the classroom.

Ellen MurfinISU
Early Childhood Education Interested in... Kindergarten Special Ed Love pugs. compassionI believe if a child does not feel loved and you are not compassionate about what you do, learning will not happen.
Spending time working with children in crisis has taught me that every child needs someone to love them and listen to their story. We all need to feel warm and fuzzy inside just like a teddy bear. goalEllen is working on teaching her students from a place of humility and mutual respect. She can practice building relational trust with her students while leading small groups for you.

Hanna SchumanI am from New Lenox, Illinois. I am an Elementary Education major at Illinois State University with an ESL endorsement. I hope to teach somewhere between 1st-3rd grade. I love coffee and am a Starbucks barista at ISU. I'm looking forward to this summer with you guys! ; )
differenceI created my sculpture to show the positive image of our shape, size, color, learning style, interests, etc.. Being different is something that needs to be embraced rather than being seen as negative.
By sharing our differences with others, we connect and build relationships that make the learning experience more personable and engaging. goalHanna is working on practicing different strategies for keeping students on-task, and engaged in their work.
6th: She will be learning from you. Hanna can practice this by leading SEL meetings for you. 3rd: She can practice using these strategies when she leads small groups for you. Natalia NarajczykI attend DePaul University and commute from home. I am an Early Childhood Education major with an ESL endorsement as well as a Bilingual endorsement for Polish! Ideally, I would love to be a Kindergarten teacher, however I have also been loving working with 1st and 2nd graders!
impactI believe that as educators we can make such a major impact on each and every one of our students. We are the ones that they will remember from their multiple years of various types of education.
My actual sculpture symbolizes the educator as having those connections with each of their students and the little diamond on each of those strings (connections) symbolizes the special impact you leave on each child! goalNatalia is working on finding personalized resources to bring into the classroom to support individual students with their learning. She will be bringing in one tool (which might be media-based) or strategy for a student everyday.

Pre-Reflection: Our Shared Themes and Goals
Strengths
Creativity. Patience. Positivity. Empathy. Active participant. Experience. Communication. Adaptation. Coming up with new ideas. Organization. Planning. Flexibility.
Challenges
Confidence. Firmness (kind and choice-based, "we" language). Assertiveness (quiet and gentle assertion). Voice (a quiet voice is powerful). Critical of teaching performance (learning is important, too... see speaker "learning"). Building trust (be consistent, fair, kind, forgiving and loving). Methods for differentiating and personalizing learning in a classroom (CAFE framework.) Taking a leadership role and sharing ideas (course structure, equity of voice, complex question and consensus small group method). Not taking difficult situation with students personally (root cause and ABA.) Engaging a whole class while also getting to know students 1:1 (Call and response methods... see speaker "magic"). Learning from other teachers (see teacher videos and peer teaching). Opening up to people.
Goals
Patience. Relating to students (authenticity). Building confidence (be yourself). Make connections. Classroom management. Teacher mindset. Strategies for difficult situations. New teaching methods. "Teacher voice." (question: What is a "teacher voice?") Get out of my comfort zone. Be open-minded.
Thoughts and Feelings
Nervous. Excited. Excited to be working in Chicago Public Schools and in an urban setting. Eager. Positive attitude about learning new things. Scholar Institute is fun, comfortable and welcoming. Excited to meet new people. The workshops sound amazing. Excited to help teach." Excited to spend time in the city. Looking forward to gathering items for my "teacher toolbox."

Whole Group Discussion
Scholar Skill
How many domain areas should be added?
If there are many of these, is this indicative of a great lesson?
Script: In the domain areas... is it helpful to objectively write what the T says or does?
Objective
In the objective section, is it helpful to use shorthand: SWBAT (Students will be able to...) then add a specific verb (Blooms taxonomy)?
Assessment
Should the assessment be tied to the objective?
Activities
Would it be helpful to use S for students and T for teacher?

Scholar Teach Fridays
Each Friday, we introduce and analyze a mini-lesson connected to our interests and/or our on-site experience & goal.

We're working on our personalized goals and journaling about them, and our cooperating teachers received introductory letters.
We'll use a new Padlet to record our thoughts for our discussion.
We'll look closely at our Design Challenge and begin posting the activities to our Weebly sites.
This Friday, we'll each teach a mini-lesson and our peers will complete the feedback forms.
